low-cost alternator build?

I own a corolla that has a wimpy 70 amp alternator. Not many places sell a replacement that has a higher output. the places that do, charge about 400 for one. I don't have that kind of money to spare for this car. Last night I was searching for opinions and someone said you can get the stock alt rebuilt with new internal so it can be in the 90-100 amp range. That's perfect being I'm only aiming for about 1200-1400 rms. Is this true, and where can I get this done?

It is true,I had mine done on my 98 chevy truck, which only had 140 amp alt that i could buy over the counter.I now have a 225 amp in my stock location, but it cost me about a $1 per watt a couple yrs ago.Alter Starts in Dallas,Tx.area is who i used,Believe they are on E-bay also, and you can get a price too.Why not put old school amps that are 12v supply in and save your money all around?????

you can also run down to the parts store and try lexus, even lexus/toyota suv's & trucks. you will find one that uses the same regulator plug in the same case, and possibly even bigger cases. allot of times re-clocking or rear case swap will get you into a bigger range. there are also several smaller local electric/autoelectric rebuild shops if you look around that can re-wrap it and do a diode trio upgrade/doubbling. years back, i used to walk in to ae rebuild and buy all the parts/peices and whole units i wanted.

I'm in illinois for the next 4 weeks so if I cant do the texas thing but I'll check ebay.

You have to pay to play.. Its not worth getting your stock rewound. Most rewinds dont make power till real high RPMs, and you will need more amps to run 1500 safely.
I need to "play" on a budget. Not looking for 1500, more like 1200. I was going to do the big 3 and upgrade the alt. then eventually a stronger battery. I see stock cars running 1000-1500 all day with bigger alts. I'm just guessing that I'll be safe with around 1200.

It's a 95 corolla, so I'm not sure what I can get to actually fit in there. But I'll shop around. I'm not sure where to start though in terms of those shops.
