Loud random pop from sub

I've had this system installed for a little over a year. Single sub with mono amp. Over the weekend I was listening at low to moderate volumes and all of a sudden the sub emitted a loud pop, and then continued to play. It's happened a few times since then regardless of the input currently selected (CD, USB, AM/FM tuner), so I've left the head unit off. Any ideas what could be causing this?
