those pieces of wood could go through the sub.

how? they are screwed to a plywood square beneath the sub, and a second square is screwed to the top of the posts. the styrofoam spacers should keep the sub from touching the top piece, and the sub was probably bagged as well.

those things get thrown around enough to break baskets in half, a screw isnt always going to hold those pieces of wood together

IDK, mine got to my door just fine. You're going to have some problems no matter how you ship the sub, if you ship enough that way.
