I'm not sure I understand the second part of your statement...a watt is a watt as far as measurement goes...it's the loudspeaker's efficiency that makes the situation different. You don't generally have 98-100dB/W efficient speakers in a vehicle.you ever been to a concert? those 2x12's that they use for the guitars are usually under 120 watts...
120 watts being ran by a constant 110v is alot different than car audio..

Well, maybe not for the Altec Lansing system...but choose your speakers correctly, and 50 watts will be more than you need.
