Location of port

I have used several subwoofer boxes over the years. All of them had the port in the same location as the woofers, in the front. I am having a ported box made for my 4-runner to fit my 15 RE SX. Because it's being tuned to 33hz the port is going on the side of the box. Will this affect my bass a lot? Will the location of the port on the side of my box make a huge difference in SPL? What are your thoughts?
