I have one kicker L7 12" in this box - http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5776235745&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1

The box fits kickers recommended ported box size.

This is the amp I was using http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5773778746&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1

An 850 watt Type RF X6.

I was going real light with it to try to break it in. I had the volume on my head unit way less than half way up and my gain was at about 3/4 the way up. The sub would smell everytime I turned it up loud enough to get decent power out of it and eventually on a heavy bass song it just blew out. Now, whenever you try to press down the cone, it doesnt move.

What could have cause this??? Is the burning smell normal??

No, that burning smell is usually not normal. What voice coil configuration is your sub? How did you have it wired to your amp? Did you have any bass settins turned way up (HU, bass boost, your gains were obviously up a little high.., ect.)? Your amp could have been clipping and fried your sub.

HMMMM in my yoda voice " burnt coil you have, gain master you should be not.":D

I've never known to get glue burn off on any L7 i've worked with, then you say you can't push the cone down it sounds as if you burnt some shiat mang. Take it out and take it to the place you bought it.

Yea I am working on returning it and getting a new one but I do not want this to happen again. Do you guys think it has to do with the tuning/gain on my amp or that the amp has too much power or what?? Could it have been the enclosure??? It was making a smell any time I would turn it up decently loud.

I used to have 2 audiobahns powered by a 800w max legacy amp and I have ye to turn up this new system to how much I bumped the old one.

impropper adjustments can cause this. read up an gain setting tutorial and set up your ssf correctly (id be real suprised if that amp doesnt have one.)

you do understand the point of the fact is,

HIGH HEADUNIT VOLUME + LOW GAIN = TEH GOOD

HIGH GAIN + MODERATE\HIGH HEADUNIT VOLUME = TEH BAD

your amp was clipping, your sub wasnt able to cool down, hence the burning smell, hence the voice coil (copper wire) melted together inside the speaker, hence the electromagnet inside the speaker not working, hence no sound.

turn your mother effing gain down next time. you only have 850w max, when a L7 wants closer to 1200w dude.

Hence why req is the suxor:D.

as posted on the other forum, improper gain adjustments IMHO, but send it abck, get a new one and have a shop match everything....

but on brand new subs, some smell is normal, but should clear.

.
not really. if you have low voltage preouts, you have to crank the gains to match the HU, that dosent mean clipping necessarily, at all.

what im saying is, pretend we are playing guitar on a nice lil amp.

you turn the amp way up, but turn the volume down on the guitar... now we are using the 'volume knob' on the amp. this creates a nasty, distorted sound (from my expierences).

similar to cranking the gain and listning to moderate volume.

if you crank the volume on the guitar, and then turn the 'volume' up on the amplifier a little, its crystal clear and nice and loud.

im not saying you shouldnt set it improperly in a car - im just saying that putting the amp to max gain, and using the headunit to controll it is the complete WRONG way to do it.

yes, gain on the amp should be level matched to the output of the voltage from the headunit across the RCA's. period. but you should never ever ever have your gain higher than your headunit - for this application\hardware. thats all i was saying. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

if you got somthing stupid, like 16v preouts. of course things could change- but what? he has like 2v max prolly? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif
