No. The black top plate is the newer top plate that is more flexible. Heavier gauge round wire 4 layer, or 8 layer flat works fine

in fact gap ID/OD is

2.99"- 3.0" Pole Piece

3.37" Top plate ID

with imperfections in gluing the top plate down right, a coil that is 3.018 ID and 3.25 - 3.3" OD is perfect
