kinda dumb question...i guess

when i press my sub down when the amp is on should there be a little resistance? just a qustion lol
Don't do that and you won't have to worry about it. If you're worried about something being wrong with your sub, then stop doing things to CAUSE something to be wrong with it.

when its playing,and you are forcing it down like that,you could damage the woofer..ya,dont do that...im sure you would get resistance..you force anything with weight,im sure you will get some type of resistanse...common physics:crap:

no not playing i mean just powered
i dont do it/never have ..you could damage the coil/cone??tinsels?just never know..they are not meant/built to be forced,and you could force beyond its limitation,and the sub may sound good for a while,but slowly becomes damaged...due to pushing beyond its standard/current status

lol like i said it was just a question chill douch bag im not worried about my sub FOO
lol just stating the obvious. That's like me going: is it bad if it hurts when i press the knife down onto my finger? I mean obviously I'm not supposed to cut my finger off, and I know that because I'm not an idiot... so what is your excuse? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

im not doing it to a good sub lol just messing with a sony xplode from like 03 lol and i didnt know that thx tho but this thing is fvcked my friend was throwing it away so i decided to free air it on about 1k rms lol i just think there was a little res as soon as i hooked it up {i did press it down}

1) cut off end of cheap extension cord

2)hook up sub to cut end of said extension cord

3)plug in said extension cord. press down on sub if you wanna...

4)tell us what happened, better yet... shoot a vid.

lol depends on what will happen.....//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/up2something.gif.dd110ecf3ae4b76050d87598f2f8de7c.gif kinda sounds scary

it'll probably pop the coil before it really does much if it is an xplod.

As far as your actual question, if the amplifier is turned on but there is NO signal (this means volume is at 0 or something), it should have no more resistance to the touch than it would if the amplifier was off. Subwoofers work by running an alternating current through the coil. This AC current is constantly going from positive voltage to negative voltage so the coil is seeing an alternating positive and negative. The magnet on the motor will push the coil forward if it sees positive and backward if it sees negative. This is why your subwoofer is always moving in and out when it is being used. The frequency of the signal determines the wavelength of the current which changes the speed at which the coil/cone is moving in and out, thus changing the pitch heard by ear.

Based on this info, if there is no signal, the magnet is not pushing the coil in any direction and it is not able to resist motion in any certain direction more than it would without the amplifier on.
