Kicker CVR's burning smell?

The 2 12's I have are producing a burning smell when being played...at least I think its the subs. I checked the wires and they all seem to be fine. The speakers are new, and was wondering if this is normal? I guess the next thing to do is to cut the gain down on my amp maybe?

it is usually customary to keep the gains low... ure prolly slowly popping ure voice coils (not from overpowering most likley, but from simply having gains to high) turn them gains down or else u will soon be able to cook weenies over your CVR voice coils

is your gain all the way up? if they are new, it could be normal... but you could be pushing them too hard

if new, glue smell at first is normal, but make sure your not overpowering them..

how much power are you giving them and how did you set your gains?

The only time I've ever smell "smoke" from a speaker is when I hooked up a stock 6x9 to my friends JL 500/1 =D... so you should turn the gains down....

I would be careful. I also had 2 12" Kicker Comp VR's as one of my first systems and I ended up frying them. I smelled the same thing that you are smelling and thought it was the "new glue smell" or whatever people say it is. I would strongly suggest turning the gain down and not overpowering them. Also it may not be as loud as you would like with the gain turned down even more than it is now, but at least you will still have two functioning subwoofers. Funny smell = bad

make sure you have the wiring on the sub right,

Parallel: red to red-dot to (+)box,

black to black-dot to (-)box

Series: black to red-dot,

red to (+)box and black-dot to (-)box

Well, I figured it out....its 100% the new amp making the smell. Subs are fine. Just went ahead and played it for a good while today and eventually its not bad anymore. Must be b/c it is new...I am certainly not pushing the amp hard cause its barely warm to the touch after 2hrs of playing. This new amp is bigger in size than the old one, and im thinking the audio shop plugged the screw holes with some glue(that new amp sits over...cooling system flows over that area) that might be getting warm or the amp fan is pushing air by it causin the smell...another possiblity.

i dunno man, just be careful because i smelled something probably very similar to what you're smelling and i also had 2 12" kicker cvrs and ended up blowing them because of too much power

there's no set mark to set your gain. My amp is 800 rms @ 2 ohms and I only have my gain set a little under half
