JVC KDS890 help, sound gets low then cuts out

Everything was working fine until a few weeks ago. I would be listening to the radio with the volume at about 20. Then the sound would get lower so I would raise the volume to 30. Then it would get lower again. Finally I would be at 50, the maximum volume, and I could barely hear the music, plus it would cut in and out.

The head unit gets very hot. My dad burned his hand removing the **** thing. I took it to a JVC authorized service center. They had it from 11/28/2003 - 12/19/2003. I plug the radio into my car and 10 minutes later I have the exact same problem. What a bunch of crap!! I have a couple of questions.

Is it normal for a head unit to heat up like an iron would? I tested it today and the left side gets very hot and it takes like 10 minutes for the whole **** unit to get hot.

I don't have anything fancy in my car. I just bought this radio so I could play MP3s in my car. Any ideas? Please let me know if you need anymore details. I am a total novice when it comes to car audio. The car is a Mercedes Benz 1979, 300D, with stock everything. The SONY cd unit that was in it before never had this problem.

Thanks

--also if you guys know any other forums where I can post this...let me know.

1) Head unit is defective or

2) You got a nasty short in your speakers somewhere.

No, it's not normal for a deck to get that hot.

Is one speaker lower than the rest?

It could be the speakers. I don't hear the speakers in the back very well, or even the front for that matter. I really need to replace all of those speakers.

I think as a test I am going to stick my old Sony head unit in there and see if I get the same problem.

Thanks for your help!!
