Jvc Kd-r900

That's why I got mine, did everything I wanted for a great price. The only thing it doesn't have is a built in crossover for running active and time delay. But I'm running a 3-way system up front so I can't use those anyways

I've only used a 30gb ipod and a 1gb flash drive with it. I'd say its pretty quick, faster then my pioneer deh-4900.
Pretty soon I'll be switching to an external hard drive though because I like the way it navigates those better then the ipods. With the ipod, when you click menu it brings you to the "playlist/artist/album..." menu which I don't like. But with the hard drive it just brings you into the folder you are currently in which is great for me because usually I just want to swtich albums within an artist
Hmmm...but dont the up/down arrow buttons switch to the next folder? I have my music organized like this: http://ungraphic.com/stuff/folder_structure.jpg

I tested the KD-R810 and pressing the up/down arrow buttons just skipped to the next folder relevant to the folder hierarchy, basically, it just goes to either the next disc number folder, or if its a single disc album, it goes to the next album of an artist and if its the last album in the alphabetical list, it goes to the next artist and so on and so forth (pretty simple and really logical, so much better than how the sonys, alpines, pioneers etc handle it all).

Actually I've never tried that. I always just push the Menu button (to the right of the up arrow button) and that brings up the files in the folder you are currently in. It displays 3 file names at a time and then you can use the volume knob to go up/down through the files.

Pressing the back button then goes back a folder. Arrow keys are cool though, I'll have to try that.

EDIT: ^^ That's for a flash drive

Hmm. Man, i'm on the fence, i can either replace my Alpine CDA-117 for a new unit, or go to the JVC KD-R900. But what I really want is the unit to scroll through lists and items THIS fast:

Pressing 'next' to go to the next track is almost instantaneous in the video, which is the same for the R900 i would assume. My CDA-117 gives lag when connected to a usb drive and via mp3 CD. Problem is, my usb connection failed so i dont even remember how fast it scrolls through ipod menus and artist lists, etc. The lag issue is a serious problem for me.

Oh sweet! Thanks! Yeah videos say it best, there really need to be more live videos of head units from users and manufacturers, i know its a pain but it gives a REAL feel for the units out there. I'm new to car audio and i come from a very hardcore portable digital audio player background. I didnt expect my choices to be so limited in terms of proper user interface, after the whole 'fast and furious' era i would have thought head units would have been more refined by now, but its still heavily lacking.

Anyway, I know the JVC KD-R810 scrolls quite fast through lists, and when the knob is rotated too fast for the unit to display the folders/files being skipped through it changes the display to numbers, so if in a list of 50 artists, it will display 20/50, 21/50, 22/50.....when stopped it displays the name again. A little weird and not exactly ideal but still much better than having to wait for things to show up as slow as this:

AWESOME. Thats perfect. Thank you so much. This pretty much sums up everything I needed to know about the deck. I can't wait for mine to come in, should arrive by Monday, gonna see if I can get it installed the same day. I looked up the info on the first page and you mention the HU's internal amp can be turned off. Does this mean an external amp in my car's trunk would do all the work, causing less strain on the HU and less heat produced (therefor less of a chance of overheating)??

This unit is amazing, especially for its burr brown DAC and all other goodies.

The internal amp has three settings: high, low, and off.
I believe the point of it is just like you said, mine is turned off because I am using only external amps
Three settings? Thats interesting. But how do the high and low settings differ from eachother? Is it power output? Like instead of 50wattsx4, it becomes 25x4 or something? Thats.....a little weird....

IIRC the high setting is the normal setting to get full power from the internal amp. With the low setting on the max volume you can turn it up to is like 20? (out of 50). And off the internal amp does nothing

yes, but I don't know how to do that......I should find out....
ya you should figure it out. i think im pretty set on this deck. sometimes i like to just use the ipod to control everything so that is def one thing i want to find out.
