Just got quoted 3 days and $1900 for install

Mike's Chop Shop is just the name I made up after cutting out the rear deck on BigJoker's Caddy one night. I don't do hack work, but I'm not afraid to cut/fabricate when it needs to be done as I've built 3 drag cars from the ground up, so I have some skills...

How would they stay open if they only charged for their installers pay?
They wouldn't They would go out of business.

If they are charging that 40per man hour, thats already 1920 dollars and yur geting a box..

Not REAL pricey. It's just pricey to us because we are used to working on our cars.

I'm sure you could find it for around cheapeif they did a faster install. But your still likely looking at 1000+

wow thats probably 3 weeks sallary for one of their installers.
Where have you been installing??? I use to make close to that in two weeks at a BEST BUY //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wow.gif.23d729408e9177caa2a0ed6a2ba6588e.gif

I have the comps, amps, cleansweep, sub, deadener and wiring. I wanted an install, front doors deadened, big 3, and box built (just a plain 1 cube after displacement carpeted box). I was stunned by this quote. 3 days and $1900 in labor for that? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif
The reason for it being so high is that you are bringing in the equipment... The shop is not making any money off you you buying from them so of course they are going to jack up the price on labor. You would see a much better deal if buying the equipment from them.

1900/24 (3 days labor)= 79.16/hr That is really not a bad rate at all

2 men for 3 days 8 hours per day at $40 per hour, not unreasonable at all. IMO
This is why all your local shops are closing, eveyone has a friend that will do it for less:rolleyes:
It shoudln't take nearly 50 hours to install comps, deaden the doors, make / carpet a box, run wires, and... well, that's it.

It took me 43 hours running wire/rca, doing the big 3, installing amps / fabricating amp stands, designing / building a 3.5 cubed ported box, installing said box, tuning amps.

And that's by myself. And I'm no professional and I had nothing but wire strippers, a flats head and phillips head screwdriver, table saw + clamp & glue, and I borrowed my Dad's air saw to cut the holes...

I expect a lot quicker install from a shop. But, odds are, they're gunna half *** the install even though they're charging a lot. Because, most shops have this mentality that once the car is out of their shop, it's not their worry. Most shops (notice most, not all) have little to no integrity. I've seen a few stories where the shop apologized, and reimbursed the person and re-did the install. But there's a plethora of stories where the shop told the person to fuck off, and it wasn't their problem.

And that's why local shops are going under. Over-pricing for shoddy work.

Yes. It's not. But why would it take 3 days to do a normal install by professional installers? They should be able to run the wires, install comps and deaden the car with in a day (8 hours).

paid breaks (whenever they want to take them)

paid lunch (probably an hour each day)

figure about 2 hours total for 2 installers for breaks and lunch each day

This is true, I have never deadened doors, so I can't attest to that. But installing comps and running wires should not take 8 hours. and I just built my box in 2, and it was my first box build ever.

You figure a regular day is 9-5, assuming two installers are working on the car and both get there on time and start on time.

That's 8 hours of work. Most lunches are an hour, and 2-15 minute breaks. That's an hour and a half. So, the time is down to 6-1/2 hours.

That's a total of 13 man hours a day.

One person to run wires/RCA and tune amps, one person to install comps / deaden doors. If they're professionals, should only take all of 4 hours? If they're efficient. Deadening would take the longest. But after the wires are ran and amps are set, the second person could help deaden the doors. Which, shouldn't really take all that long.

I figure 2 hours per door should be sufficient.

Now, if it's one installer, it would take a full work day to deaden / run wires/RCA's. But it could still be done.
