Just got a diagnosis for our son.

Personally, I don't think it's a real disease. I know it's classified as some specialized functions and tendencies of the brain, as well as actions that the child makes.
I think its more of a personality thing than a disease as there is nothing you can do about it, nor is there anything detrimental that comes from it.

The reason the specialist was so intrigued with you being an electrician is because when you were younger, nobody considered this a disease, it was a personality trait, as I think it still should be. After all, what does someone telling you that your child has Aspergers do if you can't treat it?
I don't feel it's a disease either, it does raise some extra challenges though. He finds it very difficult to make friends, he just has no idea how to react to certain things. That is one of the hardest things for my wife and I, to watch him and know how much he'd like to play with the other kids, but not know how to approach them, or react if they approach him.

It is however more than just a personality trait, kids with Aspergers also have other issues. With our son there is some difficulty with sensory awareness, his balance is horrible. The occupational therapist figures it is that his brain has trouble understanding the signals his body is telling it. This is very common with Aspergers.

What does someone telling us our son has Aspergers do? It allows us to get extra help for him in the areas he needs it. It gives us a name to research and find resources that can allow us to help him understand the problems he might face. Some symptoms can be treated with medication, but my wife and I do not want to just throw some pills at him to mask the problem.

Thank god you are taking that approach. My g/f is going to be a teacher and when I help her with her studies I see so many different diseases that psychologists throw pills at to fix.

I wish you and your family well, and although your kid may not be the football star, it's not all bad. Personally, if I look at the traits of this disease I could fall into the category, as many people in my profession do.

Being the popular football star may be the thing to be in high school, but once you get into college and beyond he will find a group of friends who shares his interests and do well.

I hope the little bit I know about this has shed some light on this for you and maybe you can take solice in the fact that your son could possibly solve the worlds energy crisis. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

That's awesome! You have no idea how much fun you have instore. I have an autistic godson and I gotta tell you, there is nothing more hilarious than pulling his shirt over his head, smacking him on the ***, and then laughing uncontrolably as he runs around in circles until he smacks face first into a wall.

I love you, Banana.

You let my conscience rest knowing that there's something out there more evil than myself.

Darwin, Einstein, Micalangelo, Sir Issac Newton... I could go on and on.
Am I really crazy, or do you guys see this as doctor's taking things a bit too far?

First they tell you that your child has a form of autism, and I have a cousin who is VERY autistic, non verbal and violent. Thats the first thing that I would imagine comes to anyone who is told that there child is autistic.

Then they tell you that there is no treatment, but he will live a normal life just be a bit anti social, so really is it a disease or just a personality trait?
thin line between genius and insanity? haha

My brother rana group alot of the kids were heavily autistic with alot of other problems. Also my mother is a psychologist. From what ive heard countless times is medication makes it harder for the kids to get used to being around other kids. Some actually cause them to seem more ADD so then a drug spiral begins. So just be careful with what doctors perscribe. Most dont work and cant even be compared to a loving parent.

Wish ya luck man

From another thread:

My godson has autism. You shouldn't be depressed. Take advantage of the situation. It is funny as hell to pull their shirts up over their heads and watch them run around freaking out until they smash into a wall and fall down in a daze.
Might be time for some new material.

Brilliant. You have acknowledged that telling the truth is much easier than telling lies. You don't have to try to remember the truth.

Dummy.
