John's first car project help-thread

I've posted in another thread that I wanted to go active with my speakers. But more than that now, I'm looking to do a full semi-SQ install. Sound deadener, decent electrical, the works.

Kind of along the lines of this guy, I've never done a big install before, or even a moderate one for that matter. I might not go to completely the same lengths as him, but that's the general idea: do what it takes to get the most out of the equipment that I pay for.

I will have tons of questions -- some stupid ones, but hopefully mostly good ones. Thanks in advance, I'll be grateful for any help/advice. And I will display the fruits of your help in my future build log. Thanks!

oh, and i know, i'll say it for you: cool story bro

so right now I have a 1993 Subaru Legacy. It has 130,000 miles. It could last another 100k or just another 100 -- I have no idea. But i'm in the market for a new car. I plan on getting one within the next 6 months. I'm 90% I am going to buy an SUV or a crossover... something where i'm a little higher off the ground, and where i'll have some cargo space for my sub(s)/amps.

So I guess my first question is... should I wait until I get a new car to spend any type of money? Or should I build an install in my current car to get practice, so that in my new car i'm less apt to f*ck something up?

As for my budget... I definitely want to do a more "budget" build, like the guy I linked to above. I'm willing to be financially lenient for the more essential stuff though. I don't want to put a limit on my budget, but I don't have too much disposable income either.

Some vehicles I'm considering:

2008 Nissan Rogue

2003 Lexus RX

2007 Mitsubishi Outlander

2004 Toyota Sequoia

2010 Nissan Altima Coupe 3.5L manual (not an SUV, but the car I had originally planned on getting)

i've got a Rogue and love it. 3 amp and a single 12" with an Audiocontrol 6XS and a Sony Double Din.
Cool, that audiocontrol uses Linkwitz-Riley crossover which is better than the traditional butterworth right?

And how much space (without folding rear seats) of cargo is there? What's the biggest box (cubic footage) you could fit?

Did you do a big 3 upgrade? Did you need to put in new alt? Did it need any deadener or is it pretty quiet?
