JL W312 is smoking!!....literally

i didn't change anything on the amp. All i did was disconnect the + and - from the enclosure, removed the enclosure, installed 2 days later (with + to - and - to +).

corrected to + to + and - to -.

Amp did not go into thermal protection.

I get bass for 20-30 seconds and it smokes and quits.

if i disconnect the the - or + speaker wire and reconnect to the enclosure, it seems to reset the speaker. Again i get bass for 20-30 seconds then it smokes and quits.

my amp is a Rockford Fosgate p400-2 with around 400 rms pushing this 1 JL Audio 12W3V3-4 which is supposed to handle up to 500 rms. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

make sure you didnt pinch a speaker wire putting it back.
also, throw a dmm on the subs coils.

i'll check the wires again and make sure nothing is pinched. If they were pinched, isn't my amp suppose to go into thermal protection mode?

what do you mean by throw a dmm on the sub coils?

read the coils to see if they give you any impedance reading. if they still display their proper impedance then the sub is ok and the amp is at fault.

myonly guess to all this is you probably crossed your speaker wires and shorted the sub out.

Since i had the syetem installed 02/08, I took it to my audio guy. I told him the sub would bump for 15-20 seconds, then quit and start smoking. He tested the sub with some kind of meter which tested fine. Apparently no damage to coils, cone are any part of the sub. it just got really hot.

Next, he tested the amp with one of his speakers, which blew immediately. turns out the amp is shorted and putting out a constant 12 volts. Since it still under warranty, he is sending the amp back to Rockford Fosgate for repairs. He said it would take about 1-2 weeks.

I love my audio guy.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/veryexcited.gif.c26a15f316d23068607f36ddacd7a7ab.gif
