okay so i'm relatively noob so go easy guys. Right now i have a jl12w3v2 in a ported box. ive been thinking about going smaler to get a tighter sound. would two kicker comvr8s give me the same boom but tighter punch? i'm on a limited budget and the amp i'd be using is an audiobahn a800t.

I believe that "tighter punch" you're looking for is midbass. In that case, you need either a midbass driver or a new set of components rather than a new subwoofer setup.

the w3 is nice it just sounds muddy ported in a trunk. i have an 03 mazda protege. i think ill just go sealed and turn up the amp a little. the only other thought i had was the soundsplinter rli-8. that thing looks fierce and would take up way less space.

That ported box takes alot more space than a sealed box will. When you bought it they should have explained all this to you. I have 2 JL12W3V2 in a sealed box in a SUV, Sealed because I didn't want to give up my cargo space. A single 12W3V2 in a ported box will be louder and have more boom to it than the single sealed. You already invested your money in the sub why not just get another box? Find a shop that has both sealed and ported boxes and look at the size differance. What kind of music do you listen to? The sealed box will give you more SQ than SPL but you can still make your teeth rattle. If it sounds muddy maybe you should try adjusting your amp and HU settings.
