Considering tube amps, for example, can cost hundreds to thousands of dollars for under 10w of power.....yeah, $1/watt isn't such a bad deal.
There are hundreds and hundreds of amps that cost equal to or well over $1/watt.
Everyone likes to criticize JL for their pricing in a product-to-product comparison, JL vs. Hifonics for example, without considering where JL's pricing falls in the grand scheme of the audio market. In the grand scheme of the audio market, they really aren't badly priced.
But ofcourse;
Anything less expensive than JL is a decent deal.
JL is overpriced.
Anything more expensive than JL is worth the cost because of some various aspect such as prestige/etc.
JL is always the cut-off, the line in the sand so to speak, for these discussions.
And to put things into perspective, here's a realistic example; the Alpine PDX-4.150 MSRP's for $750 according to Alpine's website (that's $1.25/watt for those keeping track). The JL HD600/4 is on JL's website for $799.99. That's a difference of $.09/watt, and the JL features selectable 12db/24db slopes which is something the Alpine doesn't offer.
