As promised I'll keep updates of my progress posted if I can.

You'll excuse me if this project takes awhile, i'm taking it a step at a time and i'm very busy.

Day 1. i've mainly just removed covers and those massive sinks. Next on the list is to check all those transistors. All 36+ and the resistors paralleled to them.

This should be pretty neat to see...I take you know what you're doing?

well it's def. going to be a learning experience. right now i'm just checking components for low resistance and such but if i run into bigger repair needs i have a few cheap amps to practice on.

Ok first question guys.

I'm studying up on MOSFET transistors since I plan to check them first.

It is my understanding (from most sources) that the gate voltage basically regulates the voltage flowing through the transistor (like a faucet.)

I also see everywhere that these transistors are used to amplify the current going through them but I've found no good explanation as to why this is true.

So how does a transistor effectively amplify a current? It would seem that if the transistor works like a faucet, the voltage across the transistor could only be equal or less than the original voltage.

Please feel free to tell me if I'm completely off base. Remember, this is a learning experience for me.

On a side note, I contacted JL audio tech support.

They will not provide schematic diagrams for the amp but they do repair un-serialed amps.

The repair of the amp costs a flat fee of $180 and a re-serial fee of $50.

If they cannot repair it they will replace it.

While this seems fairly reasonable depending on the price of shipping, I would still like to see if i can discover the amp's problem myself.

I wouldnt... Id rather send it and get a new one. Maybe practice on something smaller/ worth less. If you wanted to the JL could pull some good money, but not if you **** it up beyond JL touching it.

THIS

buy a blown crunch amp here or soemthing

That may be the best thing for me to do. I guess 250 some bucks is not too steep for getting a like new repair, I did forget to ask if they give a warranty on the repair.

As far as practice, I do have an old POS sony 2 channel amp i got from like autozone. I could always hook that up to a .5 ohm load. lol
