Ok so my jl amp continues to blow fuses.

Here's the setup:

Pioneer AVIC d3 HU

Jl 1000/1

Jl 13w7

Jl 300/4

4gauge (true 4) from car battery to rear and additional sealed battery(700-800 cca aprox)

4 ga. From batt to 100a. ANL fuse to 100/1

4ga ground aprox. 1-1 1/2 ft. To sanded 1/2" bolt on fender for ground.

All bass boost/gains set to flat/0

While system is playing I am getting between 13.7-14v. At amp terminals.

System seems to play good for me tuning using a c.d.(zz top)

System blows fuses when my son plays some heavy bass tracks through his iPod connection via a mini RCA plug to front of h.u.

I explained to him that he needs to have the volume on his phone somewhat low and use the volume on e h.u. To regulate the volume.

I should also point out that we were having the same issues with the previous setup.

Jl 10w7 and jl 500/1 amp.

No way that amp in perfect working order would pop a 100a fuse. Are any fuses on the amp popping?

What exactly do you mean by"are any fuses on the amp popping"?The 100a. ANL fuse is blowing.that's the issue. No other fuses on the 300/4 amp have ever blown.

If you're running 4 gauge (presumably more than ~12') and you're running 1300 watts worth of amplifiers, you're drawing too much current for the wire and the fuse. And having a second battery can help but, not if the second battery is also a part of the load on the alternator, via the undersized wire and fuse.

If your amps collectively average an efficiency of 75% and they're rated at 1300 watts, then the DC current they need is about 1625 watts worth, which equates to about 140 amps of current draw from the power source. And then we have to also consider that JL does not overrate their amps so.... you're dealing with more than 1300 watts of output and thus, more than 1625 watts of input. I don't know the efficiency of the JL amps you have but I would assume the big one is a D class and the small one is an A/B class so in reality, you're probably looking at 75% efficiency for the bass amp and 50-60% for the 4 channel, which of course, increases current draw.

You need 1/0 cable from the alternator to the second battery, 4 gauge to the bass amp and 8 gauge to the 4 channel.

And you can't expect that having a second battery will eliminate the need for additional current from the alternator because every time you **** a big chunk of current out of that second battery, it tries to bite that much and little more current from the front, because it wants what it had back plus a surface charge.

Lastly, do you have the big three done? You didn't say one way or another but if not you're probably also not running an HO alternator so there again lies a weak link in the chain of power transfer from alternator to the ears.

In simple terms, it takes power to make power. And you can't make as much as you take. :)

EDIT: You can't say s u c k here?

FFS.

Good info and thanks again. I originally did the big three, but the car has had the engine rebuilt and and the front end replaced, so I will have to check the engine block to frame ground. I think the batt. Ground and alt. to batt. Upgrade are still good.

Another question I had was someone told me to add a battery isolator, engine bay 200 a.is this needed to kee both batteries charge and to keep from burning my factory alt./ wiring harness?

I was also having this same issue with the 10w7 and 500/1 amp as far as blowing fuses.
