but since the 80's technology has peaked, and what used to be loud then, can be compared to a single 8" nowI don't disagree with that. It's just that when go with a bigger sub, they become less efficient without additional power. Add to that the recovery time from the cone and you can introduce distortion more easily. Today's subwoofers aren't very efficient, I came from the heydays of car audio in the late 80's & early 90's when a sub could be ran with a 150 watt amp.LOL Today's subs hit harder, have more excursion, and just require much more power.
I do disagree on the efficiency & distortion part though
