JL 10w7 burning coil

I have a 10w7 hooked up to a 1000/1 in my car. The amp is turned down, and doesn't seem like it should be too much for my sub. Me and two different car shops have looked at it. I have broken 3 subs in, and every time i go to turn it up i get this smell, and then it just gets worse and worse. I have taken each one to the store and found out that my coil is burnt to a crisp. any idea why this might keep happening?

just because you "think" that you aren't pushing them that hard doesn't mean you aren't. Too many times I've seen people come on here and say "Well, my gains were only at half." Which is not correct, because even though the gains are at half, the headunit may send a really strong signal, like maybe 6V-out or the bass boost or bass settings on the amp or head unit are maxed. That would cause your amp to clip, and if you're amp is right at the RMS rating of the woofers, THAT + clipping would toast your coils.

yea just because your gain is set 50% doesn't mean your amp is putting out 50%

rated power. What size enclosure?

like two? not if you keep sending them clipped signal.

if i got another 10w7 up to that amp would that solve the problem?
Well if you're current one is burned out, then adding another wouldn't be solving the problem. JL has a great guide to setting your amplifier gains with a digital multimeter, but to be truthful, you can really just do it by ear. I mean, there's a point where adding more volume just doesn't get louder, you start hearing distortion, so back off the gains so that when you're headunit is at about 75% volume, there is no distortion.

The W7 is 1000W rms and that 1000/1 should be powering it perfectly. Those woofers can even handle more power if it's a clean signal. So the only way you could be burning up those coils is if the woofer was defective to begin with, or more likely, you're sending them clipped waves.

its ported, i dont know what it is tuned to, ultimate audio did it for me

Don't take this as being offensive, because it's quite common. But the first thing most people with systems that they have had someone else install for them, is to turn up the bass settings and/or gains. Again, it's a common mistake, everyone does it with their first system because they don't know better. But that very well could be the cause.
