Jeep Wrangler 2001, Which sub should I use?

Hi All,

First & Foremost I'd Like to say I'm somewhat new to all this stuff, I know the basics (Hooking things up, etc), But my issue is that I have a Jeep Wrangler '01, and As I'm sure you may know, space is very limited.

Currently I have two amps (A Kicker ZX850.2, and a Kicker ZX700.5) , Right now, the ZX700.5 is in the Jeep.

I'm in the middle of a transition though, I did have the ZX850 in there powering 2 kicker 10 inch subs, It sounded alright, but the box was crammed in-between the hatch and the back seat. (I'll attach some photo's of the box to this thread).

The Box isn't ported or anything like that, -Again this is where I'm clueless, I dont know much about proper space requirements, What porting does, etc.

I have an old kicker Comp VR here, it's 15 inches, And I decided to take it out in the Jeep and set it up with the ZX700.5, It sounded great, it turned a lot of heads thats for sure. But the enclosure that sub is in is just huge, and the sub also has an issue dropping in and out, like I said, I was just experimenting around.

Anyways, What I would like to find out is..

1) The hatch in the back of the jeep has about 8 inches between the back of the backseat, and the hatch. I am really looking to get some good bass out of my install, And need to know which sub/enclosure I should get.

I did take the 15 inch kicker out of its enclosure, and just position it in the hatch of the Jeep to see what space would look like with just the speaker alone (If i could build a custom enclosure for such a speaker) and it turned out to be about an inch free. I can move the back seat in the jeep up about 2 inches, maybe 3 at the most if i really need to.

I looked at the Pioneer iB Flats a little bit, and I looked at some of the shallow mount kicker subs, but after hearing what that kicker comp vr 15 inch sounded like, It really makes me want to move more-toward something that's 15 inches, and will still work alright in that small amount of space I have to work with.

This is the Sub I was experimenting around with:

And here is my old enclosure, which I plan to replace with a 15" (Hopefully) mono sub.

I have a pretty good budget to work with here, so money shouldn't be too much of an issue.

Thanks guys! And I look forward to seeing everyone around on the forums!

take the back seat out thats what I did........gives you LOTS of room....you dont need a backseat anyway....lol
hahaha, Yeah, I need that there. Nice to see someone actually replied on this forum. But I just got back in the house, I ported one of the subs, and tested it, it's probably at-least 3-4 times deeper now, something i should of done from point a. But I still would like to just get one in there, I'm looking at the Solo Baric L7. Hopefully I can think up a way to fit a 15 inch sub back there :p

Anyone else have any suggestions, ideas?

1 12 L7 would get loud and wouldn't need a huge box......
So you think that might be the speaker I should consider leaning toward then?

On the floor in the back I have 13 inches from the bottom of the back seat to the hatch

Between the top of the hatch and the top of the seat I have 8 inches

And from left to right theres 33 inches.

I just kind of threw this together in Photoshop, Do you think this would work well? I know on Kickers website, they want at-least 3 Cubic Ft. of area inside a ported box for the 15" Solo Baric L7.

I'm not sure how many cubic feet these dimensions will add up to. (Que someone on the forum whose good with math?! :p)

How much room should there be between the sub itself, and the back of the seat?

yeah i have to agree with him on the l7's ....yes I know they are loud.....I use to have four 15" l7's in my 97 jeep wrangler.......but that was before I found forums like these and actually went to comps and heard other subs that WERENT mainstream......theres TONS of subs out there that can get louder than l7's and sound a SHIT load better........

yeah like the NS,lvl4xl,fi BL,9500G, list goes on

If you are going for spl you will want to load on the tailgate instead of the back of the seat. There should also be room under the back seat to pick up some more space in addition to your design. Looks like 3.05 cu ft with 3/4" Didn't allow for sub, will be around .1 for a 15.

There are pre-fab boxes availible for the Wrangler that fire downwards can fit 2 10's and you can get some pretty beffy 10's back there.. there is a pic floating around here someone on this forums of a rangler wtih a hudge 12 face backwords.. dont know what it sounded like but looked pretty sick.. you really need some air space in front of the sub so it can move the mass properly and sound its best..
