Just installed a sub woofer setup in my son's Jetta.

10 inch Alpine type S in a sealed box located in the trunk.

Amp = Hifonics Zeus ZRX1200.1D

The sub coils are wired in parallel for 2 ohms. Checked with DMM and reads 2.1ohms.

Not too familiar with the type s, but how are you running the input to the amp, also where is your gain set? How much is the sub moving?

How are the gains set? And you really can't expect too much out of a single 10 in a sealed box. That amp doesn't do rated power either, but it should still do alright.

I know this isn't correct but we started at 0 output from the Pioneer and slowly turned the gain up on the amp. Had to turn the gain on the amp all the way up. Ended up backing it off a bit and setting the Pioneer up to +4.

That could be part of the problem. I'd consider getting a line driver or swapping out the head unit to get higher preout voltage.

Would it be beneficial to change to a ported box? I saw some refurbished Kicker 12 inch solo baric L5 in a ported enclosure for good a price. Any thoughts on them? I heard they hit really hard.

with 900-1200 watts to work with, you'll only get louder with a better box and more cone area, not a high rms subwoofer.

a pair of 12s with 300-500 rms each in a good ported box, (not prefab) will get very loud compared to your type S in a sealed box.

Yes a ported box would make it louder. An l5 12 in a ported box should be louder than the type s 10.

No. Stay away from Kicker subs unless it's a Solo X

And a ported box is beneficial, but only if built correctly. Almost no prefabricated boxes are worth a crap, though.

especially how small those prefab kicker boxes are, You need almost double the size of those boxes in order for them to actually perform.
