Isobaric in a truck?

Ok, I have absolutely no knowledge about isobaric installs. I will soon be recieving 4 eD 9kv.2s and was wondering if an isobaric install is possible. My main question is whether or not isobaric installs require more volume than a standard sealed install.

Well, I'll already have 4 subs, I have enough power to give each one about 150% RMS spec. I have enough room to give each one eD's recommended airspace as well. I just had the idea and wanted to see if going isobaric was worth it and what i would have to do.

With isobarik, all T/S parameters remain the same except VAS - which halves. The end result is an enclosure that is basically half the size using the two units in clamshell verses a single unit alone.

You get the same sensitivity from Isobarik as you would a single driver, but you will require double the power to achieve it since you are pushing two units and not one.

Isobariks, if done correctly, produce bass that is effortless and low in distortion since one driver is effectively "supporting" the other.

I mentioned clamshell but you can build them face-to-face with one driver mouted outside the enclosure.

I could see doing an Isobarik build for home use, but I am not sure if you would benefit greatly in auto use.

Best,

Mark

I don't think Isobaric is what you are looking for.

As was mentioned, the main attributes are that you can use 1/2 the enclosure volume (but you still have one sub sticking out of the enclosure, so how much space is really saved?) and slightly less distortion....though I don't think I've ever seen any distortion plots showing how much it actually decreases.

Fun Fact; The original Kicker Solobaric got it's name because it was a single sub ("solo") designed to operate as a pair of isobaric subs; i.e. in half the enclosure space of typical subs of the time ("baric")

In all honesty, I would have saved some space by going isobaric. I was originally planning to downfire if I didn't go isobaric. I'd already have to leave some space underneath the woofers for proper air flow. With the low mounting depth of the 8s, I would have only had to raise it up a couple inches, and it would have decreased the volume of the enclosure quite a bit from what has been said.

However, it seems like I'd be cutting my output by quite a bit, which is not something I really want to do, without a significant increase in SQ.

Oh, and I already knew about your "fun fact":fro:

How about a push-pull config like the M&K MX-350? You wouldn't lose the sensitivity as an Isobarik config and you would maintain the "sub assistance" and resulting lower distortion level(s) associated with such designs:

Of course, box volume would be equal to the general spec which may not work your way.

Best,

Mark
