I read a while back it has something to do with making more accurate bass. a memphis dealer was telling me it is one of the best sounding subwoofers ever made ( he wasnt trying to sell one to me either)

Each layer has a spider - it is supposed to increase linearity.

Hold a sledge hammer towards the middle with one hand... pretty hard. Then hold it with one hand at the middle and another farther from the mass... alot easier. Same deal with multiple spiders above the mass of the coil.

Not sure how necessary or effective it is, but thats the idea.
