i have a cabl/dsl router on the way with 2 3 foot ethernet cables. i have my mane pc set up with my wifi usb card. i have my laptop connected from my modem. for some reason the laptop does not wana connect with the usb wifi. hmmm

I believe you need a router

A switch works on Layer 2

Some Switches will work on other network layers but it would just be cheaper and easier to hook up a router.
