Is this box "Free Air" for my subs?

my shop just got done telling me that my 5 cubic ft. box (34hz) for 2 type r's is like FREE AIRING THEM and I shouldn't have went bigger then 3 cubes MAX. They are saying it cuts my RMS in HALF so instead of 500 its only 250! They also wired my opti2000d to 4 ohm because they said 1 ohm will blow my subs. my subs are getting 350 each and im dissapointed. I want to give them 850 each, but i dont know if the box is indeed to big for two r's. Tons of people here said 2-2.5 is great for them.

rewire them pos to pos and neg to neg for 1 ohm, the shop is somewhat correct in that larger boxes = lower rms to reach mechanical limits ... according to others though it should be fine , search "type r" and read reviews yourself

haha.. u listened to a local shop. NEVER do that. ok maybe if u find a good shop but i think your fine with that box... and give em more power see what they do

About wiring:

I have terminals on the box, does that matter? Do i even mess with those? Or do i just pull out the subs and wire them that way? total noob, please help

pull out your subs

put a wire from pos to pos and neg to neg, then run a wire from 1 of the pos and 1 of the neg to the terminals, do this for both subs... then run the terminal wires to the amp ... terminals just make it easier

do you have both subs wired to 1 terminal or a terminal for each sub?

Honestly I havent even looked yet, the shop did this last night and i think they mounted the amp on top of the term's, ill have to take a look later when i get home

terminals are usually on the back of the box...

Yea there is 2 terminals on that box.

Take out your subs, and wire them pos to pos, neg to neg to the terminals, and then do the exact same thing from the terminals to your amp.

That box is a very good size for those subs. They said 3 cubes MAX? Ha, idiots.

Type R's can mechanically handle 800+ clean watts it a proper box.

clean meaning bass boost off right? They mounted the amp on back of the box covering the terminals.. i think im going back to them to have em wire them at 1 ohm today.

Also should I set the gain like normal? Or should I keep it way down? The shop guy said it will put out 850w per sub no matter WHERE the gain is

You probably misunderstood him. Having the gain all the way down CAN send full power to the subs if the volume is cranked and the input voltage is high enough. The amount of power you will send the subs will be based off of the volume of the headunit and where the gain is set. You set the gain based on a certain volume level you never plan on going above.
