Is this box even possible?!?

Okay, so its not tuned or done to any specific driver, but it is mocked up after the idea for 18"s. 4 ft long, 2 ft deep, 1 ft tall. All walls are .75 MDF. What I mean is, is is possible to put a kerfed port in that position? You can do anything in Sketchup, but what about real life? Anyone have a better idea for a kerfed port firing forward with the port on top or bottom. Subs facing up? Ideas?

Unless you're doing a high powered burp box for a SPL setup, that box is way too small for 18's, any 18's. You don't even have 7ft^3 before displacement(s). That's be a good box for a single 18" sub that likes small boxes though...oh, and the port area looks pretty small too.

It's very possible. The person building will have to be really careful and make sure that everything is glued on correctly.

Also, you should put some strips of MDF in between the crease.

Just a small strip. Like 1" thick.

BTW-- I don't think it's worth it to kerf it. You're losing structural integrity by using 3 pieces of wood rather than one.

he said it was just a moc up to get an idea of what he wants and that he knows nothing is to spec yet. cant believe how little people read lol.

i dont think you need to make 3 pieces. just make it one long piece, cut out the port hole and have the port curve up and connect to the hole.

He said that it wasn't mocked up to any specific sub, but said he was designing for a pair of 18's(and made the holes for 18's as well). Had he said that he just did the design to demonstrate the port, and didn't make any hint as to what was going in the box, then I wouldn't have said anything. Not to mention those are probably fairly close to the max dimensions he has to work with in his truck.

I can't believe how easily people jump to conclusions, lol. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif

a curved port out of mdf is doable in your situation, if you cut a kerf every 1/2 inch or so with an 1/8" blade you could make that bend. I'm not sure about the kerf spacing tho. A curved port will be stronger than a straight port, just like curved fiberglass is rigid yet straight fiberglass is flimsy. You will probably need to fill the kerfs with epoxy before it's bent and then clean it up after you bend it.
