Is Power Just Power?

OK, yes a watt is a watt. Some of those watts just sound worse than others. Yet again I have to compare my PPI PC2150 to the walmart VR3. Major difference in sound.
*sigh*

Is it the amplifier causing these mystical "dirty" watts, or the onboard devices that colour the sound? Hmmmm....

RC says the latter and he has $10000 to back it up.

Major differences in sound, yes......but not because of the watts themself. There is no SQ in a watt.....but a poor amp design can yield bad sound.

Lots of good info here. I think the conclusion is any amp will do as long as it produces enough power for the speaker you are using and it is not a total piece of sh it. Yeah? So a Hifonics Warrior Eagle paired with some entry level CDT components should sound pretty nice. I wonder how it will compare with my xtant amp with MB Quart mid range (RCE 6.5") components... I guess that's where I'll really put my question to the test.

That 'warmer' sound is also called 'coloration'...which is distortion added into the equation...
Like I said....a woofer will create a lot more distortion than 99% of the amplifiers on the market...

Especially an SPL woofer due to higher excursion.

Audiophiles also believe that Tube Amps are a gift from god yet they offer high distortion, low damping factor, etc. etc. etc. ... Basically contradicting every single thing they say you should look for in an amp ...
Back in the old days when all home amplifiers were tube amps I would totally agree with that. But today there are a few mfgs that make very nice, low distortion, decent damp factor tube amps. Lets also not forget that sound quality is subjective the same way that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The same audiophiles that have a fascination with tube amps are the same people who love vinyl over any other format. Though vinyl is high maintenance it is superior to 16 bit cds. Oh well, just my opinion.

what about reserve power? my HK7200 has huge reserve power compared to a $200 entry level sony receiver. i understand that the HK is underrated at 100 wpc but if you were to limit the HK to 100 wpc and pair it up to a sony receiver that has the same power i bet i could tell the difference every time. the sony would sound flat compared to the more dynamic HK providing the sony could even push a pair of demanding speakers without shutting down first.

RC says the latter and he has $10000 to back it up.
And apparently somebody won, but RC refused to pay him.

Squeak....I guess I just *** U ME D that he was in England, since the site was a UK site. My bad.....//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif
