is my stock alternator okay for this job?

hi there...im very new to car audio. i have bought a 15 inch sub from my friend and i plan to power it with nothing more than a 400 watt amp. im not looking for anything too powerful to be honest. my question is.....is my stock alternator okay for this sort of thing? i would think so. also will the added stress of playing a 15 shorten the life of my alternator. im kinda broke all the time so i really would never have the extra cash to replace it if it goes. thanks for any input.
