Is my Box OK?? First time Building one

Hello Guys,

This is my first box and I know nothing about building Sub Enclosures so i just went and took some measurements and started building.. this is going under my back seat on my 99 Silverado Ext Cab.. 2 x 12" Subs.. I just want some feedback or some ideas on how to finish it.. I was thinking of finishing it up with some 1" or 3/4" thick plexieglass but im not sure if i should leave the opening in the back open or seal it i dont know anything about Porting. thanks guys

opening in the back? as in how it is right now? If yes then yea seal it up or it will sound horrible. I like the look of bed liner on boxes better than carpet to finish it off.

How much airspace is that? It looks like you might have enough to use ports. I'd also suggest against the plexiglass at this point - it's going to look horrid unless you can finish the inside of the box.

yeah i didnt really want to carpet the box i was thinking of painting it also if i deside to got with the plexieglass i was going to paint the inside of the box with maybe some sort of lighting.. so you think i should seal that hole in the back and port somewhere else on the box or would that be my port?

This is why you leave it sealed.

seal it. you could do ports but not where that hole is. dont play it with that hole open.

I say seal it up leave no holes, the way it is now no that's not considered ported that would be just not finished

this might be a dumb question but ...Is there a big difference in making a box out of MDF or Particle? I think this is Particle the only reason i used this kind is because it was free We have a ton of sheet's at work..

Well from my experience those cheapo boxes you buy from wal mart or discount car audio stores most are particle board. Not as strong and strips very easy and i believe can flex easier. I go with mdf. But since yours is smaller prob wouldn't flex. Should be ok but more experienced builders should chime in, as i've only built a few boxes. And hey it was free so who cares.

yeah.. Free is good i've seen some of the boxes for my truck around $200 or more shipped so i figured why not build it for free.. I guess i should have looked into what kind of wood i should have used first.. now i know MDF is the way to go but i guess i'll try to finish this one and see how it does. It seem pretty sturdy but i guess we will see when i start using it.. if it falls apart I will know not to use this wood again.

If thats an opening on the front of the box seal that up too. Can't tell for sure from the angles.
