Is it possible to blow

Hey Guys,

Question, is it possible to blow comps that are 180 RMS with an amp that is only 150x2 RMS?

Here is an email I sent cdt and response:

I purchased the following equipment from one of your distributors:

Comps: CDT HD-62 (w/ 540 Satnet)

Rearfill: CDT CL-6X

The first problem occured about a month ago. The rear driver's side coax sounded horrible. Like something was wrong with the cone. Very distorted. I couldn't of damaged it because I am only powering it of the HU. The passanger side coax sounds perfect.

Last week, front passanger side comp went out. I was listening to music when I heard a sizzle and then no music came from that side. My amp couldn't of blown it because it sending less watts then the comps RMS. I have a Soundstream Van Gogh 600.2 which is 150x2@ 4 ohm. And it's not at full tilt.

I had an authorized dealer look at my comp on Saturday and they tested the Satnet-540 and they informed me that the input seemed to be fried and said when it fried it could have blown the mid. When you pushed the mid cone in it didn't pop or come back out. However, the tweeter seemed to be working fine.

Attached is a copy of the receipt. Your Distributor informed me to contact you directly regarding the warranty.

Can this be covered under warranty? Can you please help or direct me to the correct person to speak with?

RESPONSE:

This is normally not a warranty matter as the xover and speaker is blown due

to in proper amp gain.

Call 1877-568-3238 for RA #

We'll fix it this time but not next.

See attached info for proper gain setting

How is it possible that I blew it with my amp?

They told you all you need to know. Improper gain = //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/nono.gif.eca61d170185779e0921b0faa9704973.gif

Did you set it with a DMM correctly.

How though? The gain is at like the half way point and I listen to it at about 24

and if it were set incorrectly wouldn't it blow both of them, not just one?

you cant just set the gain at 1/2 way and say oh my gains are low, nothing will happen. If your head unit were to have 8v preouts and the gain at 1/2 way, itd be pretty easy to blow out some speakers. and no, they dont always both blow at the exact same time. on a DVC sub its even possible for just one coil to fry while the other still works.

I didn't just set it halfway up. I'm telling you that's about where the gain is set to and my HU is 2 volts. So I'm a bit confused on how I could blow a CDT comp at this level. And I am not clipping.

No way a sine wave at 150W harmed those speakers. Square wave on the other hand is sure to cause premature death. Get a bigger amp when you get them back from CDT. It will play louder and cleaner.

HUH? The speakers are 180 RMS and the amp is 150x2. Maybe I could go a little bigger but not much. Plus they are loud and clean as hell already

I'm curious how they know it was an improper gain setting when you didn't even mention in your e-mail where your gain was set or what your headunit's output voltage was.

Sounds to me like they are trying to pass the buck to you for a shoddy product (manufacturer defect or whatnot). Which is BS.

you just got a bad batch ....get another, or move on..... both your coax and comps went to shyt, why dont you track down who you bought'm from....you should have a screen name/paypal addy and see if he'll warranty them.....

isnt it dijillion?? Sp?

I consider anything shady bought online waaay under msrp.....def sounds like a defect of the boner sales tactic passive xover they push on everybody to make a few extra bucks
