is it ok to fuse near the neg terminal?

I put a new battery near my amp and I want to put a fuse near the negetive terminal (saftey issues) . Normaly I would do positive but because of space, limited wire, and lacking large dist. block, Im thinking of this route. Is this a safe way to go or not?
