For the people who put JL in the same breath as new kicker and fosgate (You are retarded). On that not i am not a huge jl fan but to say there equipment is bad is crazy and that there are many things out there that are better is crazy. Yes they are a mainstream brand but their products are good. The w6 on a sound reproduction level i will put them up 2 any sub on that level.

to call j/l overpriced in most cases is actually false. If your saying you can get a sub that can handle more power and more watts, thats true.
this

And you've just stated the reason why most forum goers dislike mainstream brands. Nearly all mainstream consumers have no clue what is going on. They simply listen to marketing and do no research. That is not limited to this hobby, either.
and this

Make that a 2.75... I'm not really against their equipment other than their 10 year old "top of the line" subwoofer.
I understand where you're coming from on that one.

But, you have to think about how whiny car audio guys are in general either way.

If JL pooped out newer versions of their subs every few seconds, people would say that no R&D goes into their subs and they just keep making new stuff to take people's money.

On the other end of the spectrum, if JL waits years between new versions, people will say that their technology is old and they never upgrade.

It's really a touch spot to be in.

I do think they handle it fairly well for the most part. The technology that they inject into their subs is enough to still compete with other companies "all new super duper" subs. Even if the tech is from 2002 or so.

I do hope they do something new with the w7, however. Its about that time. I'm glad to hear about the new w6, for sure.

Their lower lines are updated as needed as well but get overlooked because, there are so many subs at those price points that "handle half a billion watts and get omg loud" lol

I would say it has been all marketing only for 2-4 years. I mean Sundown made some decent amp innovations and subwoofer innovations. (cookie cutter amps based off their's) Then you have Mmat's, Tc sounds, SSA, Fi, Phd...

JL can afford to sell at those prices so why hate? They marketed hard and won the battle. The w6v2 is a great subwoofer and the C5 comps have a very natural sound.

PHD's been around for dang near 20 years. Wouldn't really put them with the new kids on the block

Tc sounds is not a new kid on the block. I was saying in terms of recent innovations. I believe IA is coming out with a completely redesigned Warden.

I'm an SQ guy and I don't nuthug JL. If you've got money to throw away, sure, JL's decent stuff, but for less you can have just as good and sometimes better.
Brands I'd pick over JL without question:

McIntosh

Zapco

Zed

Zuki

Arc Audio

Adire

RE (for old XXX)

PPI (Phantom series amps)
Those brands, with the exception of Adire and RE (non-existant), and PPI are all priced just as high or even higher than JL

If you read further in the thread, I show where that's not entirely correct. They're two separate thoughts, though, which is why I separated them by a space. If I'm going to spend around JL pricing, I'm not going with JL product is what I'm trying to say.

In that same quote you also said you would only go with JL if you had money to throw around. Those other brands are pretty expensive too so there's really no difference there. I don't like JL amps though

TBH, I owned my JL equipment and it worked well for what it did. My only gripe was I was paying full retail plus install from Tweeter when they were still in business. If I had just held onto my money longer, though, I could have gotten much better equipment going with the Polk SR comps and an Audison amp.

What about the JL amps don't you like?
