Is an amplifier necessary in this situation?

Hello, new to the forum and I cant find any information specific to my question. I have Kicker DS680 6x8 speakers that have a power rating of 6-35w rms and 75 max. My head unit is currently powering them and it has an RMS wattage of 20w per channel. I am in the process of adding an amp for a subwoofer and contemplating putting a 5 channel in if it makes sense to give the Kicker's more power. However... most amps are 50-75w RMS per channel, so my concern is the speakers will get over powered, or it wont make any real difference.

The car is a Mustang with shaker 500 which has some subs (not really powerful) in the doors already.

So, add an amp? or dont bother?...

Overpowering won't be an issue if you set gains correctly. A five channel would do nicely (not sure if it's still for sale but there was a nice hifonics 5 channel in the classifieds for a pretty nice price). I'd upgrade the front speakers if you haven't yet. Personally, I amp the substage and the front stage and either run no rear speakers or run the rears on deck power. If I were to amp all around, the rears would definitely be set lower than the front. Just my preference though. To answer the real question though, no an amp is not necessary for the 6x8s
