Ok, been an audiophile for years...yes I am even old enough to have had an extensive vinyl collection, know cassettes sucked, and 8 tracks were even worse!.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eek.gif.771b7a90cf45cabdc554ff1121c21c4a.gif Anyway besides cd's the furthest I've ventured is XM, which for the most part is near CD quality. How good can Ipod stuff be....I have never listened to one yet....

Ipod will play the same quality as the music given to it. Be it radio, XM, or MP3s.

The power provided to the headphones by the Ipod is what kills the SQ produced by them. Google / Ebay search for "cmoy" to solve 90% of the problem of lacking SQ in portable music players.

Depends what you're looking for. No matter what, even if your songs are ripped in a lossless form, you're not gonna get what you can from a CD. Using an IP Bus method will get you the best results, but you can only go so far from that. FM transmitters are obviously outta the question, and any RCA input won't do you much. Using songs ripped in lossless minus any EQ plugged through IP Bus in my experience is as far as it gets. Even then, low ends heavy, highs hit abusively, and depending on the model (Pioneer adaptor is best, from what I've seen) you can still get minor crackles here and there, which sounds ridiculous giving the methods. As far as I know, there's still no way to avoid some sort of distortion when using an iPod. For the day-to-day, casual listener, the right setup can do the job, but that's about it.

i HATE music coming out from mp3 players and especially Ipod, i dunno how so much people listen to them... its soo freakin' harsh, nasty sound, very cold. I dunno why...

my portable audio --->> cd player and will always be. its sad they aren't making any new cd players...

Honestly when I had my ipod, the sq wasnt far off from my portable cdplayer. They really dnt sound all that bad when listening to headphones.

idk man.. my cd player sounded very nice , nice bass, and highs, but dindt get too loud, it has controlled and balanced sound, the ipod just gets freakin loud with distortoin... its only purpose is for the 4gb or even 30gb of space and thats about it, for SQ its awfull.

all ===>> IMo.

If you honestly think xm radio bares even the smallest resemblance to cd-quality, your years of considering yourself an 'audiophile' have been an entirely wasted effort.

An ipod will sound outstanding next to these standards, whatever the connection method.

I have a 4 gig nano hooked up to my Alpine HU. The SQ is as good as its mp3-cd counterpart, however i to get low pops during song changes. Im sure that eventualy solidstate storage and adapters will become the norm in favor over cds, however as of now it leave something to be desired.

Thanks for the replies. I was interested in one of these mostly for using with an HU, so it sounds as if the SQ would be compromised.

As far as XM goes, I only consider SOME channels to be close to CD quality...not as good. This is through an Alpine XM set up which I think sounds better than others Iv'e heard.
