Ipod and Alpine H/U

I just got a new car that has an Alpine h/u with the ipod hookups. The guy showed me how to work it with his 30 gig Ipod. Some reason I cannot browse through my stuff with my 30 gig? I can unplug it, start playing what I want, then hook it up and it will play it though, but I would really like to control it from the head unit. Any ideas what is wrong? Thanks.

alpine head unites are not good a lot of them had problems with the ipod hookups sell it and go with something like pioneer

definatly go with the pioneer but ya gotta use the ipod itself i had a deck that you could control the ipod through but it blew hardcore style
