I'm installing a pair of Pioneer TS-173CI component speakers mated to a Pioneer DEH-X7800DAB head unit. The passive crossover look like this;

I'm new to this but all the pictures/diagrams I've seen about crossovers have an input from the h/u

and separate outputs for the woofers & tweeters.

As far as I can see on my units the input goes straight to the woofer then somehow back to the crossover and then out to the tweeter.

The head unit has separate outs for woofers and tweeters so I'm presuming I connect both to the bare cables on the crossover.

How can this work?

That's a cheap generic in-line crossover vs. a separate one that usually comes with comp sets.

Just follow the diagram and you should be set.

Thanks guys, just love this forum.
Would fitting these show any improvement? http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/speakers/crossovers/phonocar-2-way-passive-crossover
Almost certainly not. Factory "crossover frequency" on your component set is 4600hz. The crossover frequency on that passive crossover is 3800hz, so you would be cutting off the woofer sooner, and making the tweeter play lower.

Pioneer probably designed that set just fine for what it does. Just use the factory crossover and enjoy. If you decide it doesn't sound good enough, save up for a better set of component speakers with a proper crossover included.
