Installing a stereo input adapter for 2003 Ford Escort ZX2

I drive a 2003 Ford Escort ZX2. It has the factory installed stereo with a CD player. I am hoping to install a stereo input adapter so I can play an ipod through the existing stereo. I’ve found input adapters like this:

and this:

Do these sort of things work? Is there one that is better than the others? Do you have any suggestions on what I should use? It does not matter to me whether I can charge the ipod. Also, I have no knowledge of car audio installation. Is there somewhere I can get a tutorial on how to install these? Can you provide me with any advice? What tools do I need?

Do you have a CD changer? It looks like you loose the functionality if you do, and the best way to tell which one you need is to pull your radio and see if you have the 12-pin or 3-pin (or was it 2?)
