installing a digital volt meter ??

I would wire them to what you want to see. If you want the battery's voltage then go to the battery. I dont think the alt will tell you anything. Personally I go to the amps. It is the last thing in the electrical chain before the subs. Gives me an a voltage reading that is equal to the voltage entering the amp from the battery.

 
SO if your bi amping, Can you just pull out one of the amps power/ grounds. Run the volt meters power/ground to the amps power/ground and then reattach them to the amp? Would that give you accurate reading for both amps?

I installed a relay for my volt meter, so I didn't have to remember to turn it on/off.

I'd recommend running it to your sub amp's positive and negative inputs.

There are a couple that SMD has tested, around $20.00 that should take the wattage from most any HU. If you are tapping into the speaker wires...
