Installation Question

I'm going to be installing a H/U for a friend of mine. The vehicle is a 92 Chevrolet Silverado Cab. Does anyone know how to do so, what I might need, or any problems I might run in to?

How do I take out the stock radio so I can put the new HU in, or would that be in the owner's manual?

in a 92 you can open the glove box and unscrew the plastic cover piece (piece the deck will go in) and then install the dash kit (found at wal-mart btw) after that you just match the colors on the wiring harness w/the deck's wires then you're done!

items needed:

wiring harness $10ish @wal mart

plastic dash trim kit $10ish at wal mart.

Sounds like you're thinking of an S-10. A Silverado is a much different story.

First, the radio is a 2 or 3 piece system. There's a small display/control unit to the right of the instrument cluster. There's an optional cassette player in the center dash, under the vents; vehicles without the cassette player have a pocket in this location. There's a factory amp/tuner pack that looks like a silver box, mounted under the dash to the right of the gas pedal. The standard GM power, speaker and antenna connections are at the top of the factory amp; control wiring from the other two components plug into the bottom.

The new head unit will be mounted into the old cassette or center pocket location. You can find a specialty dash kit that's available in different colors to match the factory dash; you won't find it at Walmart. You're also going to need a standard GM wire harness and a GM antenna adapter. A pocket is available that replaces the factory control/display unit; it's not necessary however.

First remove the small plastic panel directly under the steering column. You should be able to locate the factory amplifier. Disconnect the plugs at the bottom of the factory amp. Locate the 3 screws that hold the amp and bracket into place; remove them, drop the amp down and disconnect the antenna and power/speaker plugs at the top.

Remove the dash panel that includes the vents in the center dash. Pry out on the bottom of the panel first, it's held in with pressure clips. If there's a cassette player, it's held in with two 7mm screws under the panel. Remove the screws and pull out the cassette player. There's a metal rear-support bracket behind the cassette player; it needs to be removed too. It's held in with one screw at the front, and two deep inside the cavity. You'll need a 7mm or 9/32" socket with the right size extension bar to remove them both. You can't unplug the wires from the cassette player; you either have to cut them or thread the wiring back through the dash and pull it out.

Find the antenna end and power/speaker plugs and thread them up through the dash until you can reach them in the new radio cavity. Make all your connections between the new head unit and GM wire harnesses, then attach to the factory radio plug afterwards. You do not want to try doing any crimping, soldering, cutting or rewiring inside the vehicle; the factory wires aren't well placed.

ok, well in my buddys 93 and in my 92 i used to have thats how we did it.....very informative post though!
