Installation earns me a trip to the hospital

I got a scarred area on one of my hands from a "how hot is hot " resin expirement years ago. Turns out you can get resin to smoke from adding too much mekp. Melted through the plastic container I was mixing it in within seconds . That chit is like napalm that turns rock hard. It doesn't come off easily //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

yeah resin on the skin sucks. i was doing the inside of my box when it tried to fall with my arm inside my forearm got covered and it burned thte **** outta me before i could get it washed off. i was lucky i didnt have alot of hardner in it plus i ran right inside and jumped in the shower. needless to say that box was trash after all the resin dried in the wrong spots.

One time,

I was drunk, on speed, and 17 years old.

I came in the house to grab some form of contraband, ran downstairs, jumped over a telephone cord,

and when i opened my eyes, i was laying at the base of one of my pioneer towers. I look to the right (which at the time, was "up") and past the top of the towers, and see a clod of my long hair stuck to the heat-exchange ductwork.

Picked up a scar nearly five inches long on my nugget, no idea how long I was out.

Not really an installation injury, but at least speakers were involved. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Blood and long hair is messy.

My dad was a life-long auto mechanic before he retired... he once had a bad battery (broken post inside the battery, but nobody knew) blow up on him. Car wouldn't start, so he went to wiggle the terminal on the post... BOOM. Whole top of the battery blew off!

His first reaction? He crossed the whole width of the shop (about 75 feet) in like 4 seconds, grabbed the water hose out of the car-wash man's hand, and sprayed himself in the face and the chest, all over where the battery acid had sprayed on him. Barely got anything worse than something that looked like a sunburn. Lucky he thought to GET IT OFF OF HIM, that fast!

My uncle (Dad's brother) used to work with him... he created the SECOND most hazardous situation I've seen in an auto shop. Was working on the air conditioning of a car... had it running, while adding Freon. The hose came off, and Freon sprayed RIGHT INTO THE AIR CLEANER. Two guys were goofing off, sitting on the back bumper of the same car... they started coughing and choking, and stumbled off, outside, gasping for air. Turns out, when you combust Freaon inside an engine, you get PHOSGENE GAS... ie MUSTARD GAS!! Fortunately, neither of the two goof-offs were permanently injured!

The MOST dangerous situation I've ever seen, happened in the old shop my Dad worked in, before they moved to a new building... there was an in-the-floor waste-oil tank, where they put the oil that came out of cars during oil changes. You were NOT supposed to put anything with gasoline in it in there... but sometimes, people would pour small amounts of dirty gas (left over from rebuilding a carb, etc) in there. One day, one of the idio... er, mechanics was actually WELDING something next to the oil tank... and a welding spark went right down the funnel, into the tank. RRRUMMMBLE... BOOOOOOOOMMMM! Looked like an upside-down rocket engine! Flames shot out like 10 feet out of the neck of the tank! The funnel actually got stuck IN THE CEILING of the shop, from the rocket blast!!

Fortunately nobody got hurt, and nothing even really got damaged, with the exception of the funnel, which was pretty much junk...

Worst thing that happened to me, personally... had a hood up on a car, and the hood prop failed (came out of the socket) and the hood fell. Caught the end of my finger, between the hood and the fender. Had to wait until someone else could come over and un-latch the hood, to get loose! Fortunately, it just bruised the hell out of my fingernail, that was all!

Regards,

Gordon.

Great stories Gordon! I didn't know about freon's nerve gas potential, that's incredible.

BTW: AFAIK, R134 won't do that... only R12. One other advantage to the new refrigerants (besides not destroying the ozone layer, natch)... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Does getting a part of a tape deck stuck in your hand count? Pulling out a old 2 shaft about 20 years ago and the thing was a little stuck and need coersion to come out. Well, it came out and lodged the shaft into my hand quite nice. A nice 4" scar to to show for it.
Dodged a bullet the other day, was in a hurry and my guide touched the table saw blade, knocked 3 teeth off the saw and one just knicked my right ear. Good thing I never ever stand directly behind the blade.

End result, stop work, go have lunch, send all employees to have lunch and then have a tailgate meeting and watch bum for an hour. After that we all went back to work nice and safe.
Wow! That really is dodging a bullet - quite literally! You're lucky as all ####!

Nothing more than cuts and scrapes from general install activities. Never hurt myself building boxes or anything. I did almost get a jigsaw blade in the eye though without wearing goggles. Took at curve a bit too tight and it snapped right off, hit the wall and came back and got me in the arm... so not really almost in the eye, but it scared me enough to wear goggles from then on.
