****ing stupid *** alternator...

pretty sure my cars alternator turned its last current producing revolution today...

coming home about 10 mins ago, i noticed my cars lights werent that bright ....

and every time i used an electronic device in my car, my head unit would turn off...

i dont have a sound system in, so theres no real demand on the **** thing, i dont know why it quit...maybe age? its a 95 geo prizm

i have no idea...im completely stumped right now and pretty pissed cuz i need the thing rewound or a new alternator if thats the case

it started making a whining noise yesterday about mid day, and it stayed with it til today...still does it - thought it was the power steering so i didnt think too much of it, i just have no idea what would have caused it?

sounds like it's time for a new alt, well it's a good excuse to buy a high output one if you plan on building a system right?

Does your car have the 1.6L or the 1.8L 4cyl?

I ask 'cause I have a '95 Prizm as well...with the 1.6L. If you want to go higher output in anticipation of a possible future system or whatever else it'd be considerably cheaper to have the old alternator rewound than buying a new HO unit.

yea i already made a call and i can get it rewound for $150 plus labor for installation/whatever else

Edit: I forget not everyone is friends with the folks that own the alternator / starter / auto electric shop....

I hear you man.......I'm on my 3 rd alternator in my GrandAm. If that is the original alt that came with that car then you need to buy a brand new and to hell with rewinding it. Get one with a warranty so it will last as long as you own the car.

check out motorcityreman on ebay. picked up my 200amp alternator for my ranger for $179 plus shipping. with a 2yr warranty. can't beat that.

go to pep boys or autozone...bring in the old altenator and get a new one for a low price
