can anyone help me or guide me on the best way to spray paint a vehicle. this is my SPL vehicle not a nice car and it was 300 dollars and im looking to just paint it flat black. do i need to sand or do anything or can i just tape up the windows and start spraying away?

Well it depends on what you want to do depending on how the pain looks now, if you want to reprimer it, you want to use a 220 grit but if you want to just spray away, id use a 800 grit wetsand paper and then paint over that a few layers, and then you should be good to tape up the windows and spray it

this isnt really the proper way to do it, but if you want a quick fix, this is your best bet.

yes you have to sand, otherwise there will be impurities on the surface (like oil, dust, bugs, whatever) or the paint you spray on wont stick. Its also necessary as sanding provides a mechanical anchor for the paint to adhere to. You dont want that shit pealing or bubbling off after a few washings now, do you?

You can get a cheap single stage paint setup from your local car paint store for about $200.

If there are no chips in paint no need to sand....

Where there are chips sand are smooth with 220 to blend....

Wash and dry vehicle thoroughly

Use mineral spirits and wipe vehicle extensively

(will remove wax and any polutants from surface)

Alow to dry completely(best if done on warm day)

Use Walmart flat black paint $.96 a can I think

(It covers well for being so cheap)

(Do not use KMart paint)

I did this all in a matter of 3 hrs on an old truck I had and everyone was amazed there were no runs or anything.

My 96 Dakota took about 12 cans of paint

I used Kmart paint for my Shell and it took 10 cans and still didnt cover so I had to use 4 more of WalMart paint to finish it!!!

Satin Black also works well, it gives a little shimmer but not alot

Mineral spirits will leave a microscopic layer of oil on the surface to which it was applied. I recently tried using the stuff and was severely disappointed when the finish started to "Fish-Eye" I ultimately used acetone or MEK (Methyl Ethyl Keytone) as the final wipe before painting the finish and had no problems after that.

fyi: MEK is exactly like acetone except that it evaporates much slower. It along with acetone is available at your local Home Depot.

Tis true, MEK or Acetone works great. Denatured Alcohol to, but its kinda hard to come by.

I personally had no problems..I must have gotten lucky.....I like the mineral spirits also because after the final coat is dry I rub down the vehicle to make the top coat smooth, and it's alot cheaper and not as strong as acetone which doesn't go good with any plastic...

well to make it come out the best way possible you would want to start by taking 180 grit to all the chips and feather them out so you can no longer feel them. then you would want to take and go out to 320 grit with the chips. you need to next take and wetsand the car with 600 grit make sure to sand evenly it should all look flat and even. make sure to get all the moldings out of the way and make sure to sand underneath the moldings. wash the car with a soap what does not have any of that carnuba crap in it that will cause fish eyes. you need to take than and dry it very well use a towel not a shammy. you need to use wax and grease remover and water base cleaner that you can get at any local bodyshop supplier. you will than take and use what is called an e-coat on all the bare metal spots that as well can be purchased at the bodshop supplier. what the e-coat does is ensure that the metal can not rust . make sure to pick out a halfway decent paint even lesonal which is a low end paint will do the job. as far as just leaving it flat black the base coat will need to be covered with some kind of clear weather it be gloss or mat clear or the paint will not hold up the the elements and weather and all that work will have been for nothing. well than all that is left is to mask it up wipe it down with the wax and grease remover and water base cleaner and start shooting. i am a professional so that is the correct way to paint a car follow all these steps correctly and you will have a nice paint job. remember dont rush it, it will take alot of time but in the end it will turnout very nice.
