Usually it isn't even assigned a blue dot if not synced. The wiimotes I have had will have all 4 blue leds lit up when not synced. I would of course try re-syncing anyway, but it sounds like an IR cam or sensor issue.

Check for smudges or dirt on the black lens at the top of the Wiimote. Did you switch the position of the bar? If the sensor is on top of the tv when it was below before, it can make the hands not appear.
