Impreza Subwoofer System

Need advice from anyone who has already gone through this decision making process.

Car: Impreza 2006 STI

Goals: SQ. Need tight, clean bass that goes pretty low only if I need it to. Does NOT have to be very loud. I don't need to shake the car or have people outside here it. But I also don't want it to be too weak.

Space: I'd like to have some room left in the trunk.

Music: Rock, prog rock (want to hear clearly hear the bass notes), heavy metal

So far I've learned that a sealed box enclosure is best.

Question: For the tightest, cleanest sound, do I go with 1 10", 2 10", or 1 12"? And then what size enclosure for sealed box?

I'm looking at Alpine Type R as powerful, but clean.

If I get 1 10", will it be too weak and not hit low enough?

If I get 2 10" I think it will it be more than I really need, and take up too much space.

My current guess is I should get 1 12" Type R and an amp of at least 500 RMS to match or exceed the subwoofer's power. Won't take up much space, will hit low and loud if I need it to. Is that a pretty safe guess?

I woudn't consider the Type R for a SQ driver.

Type r's are known to get loud, but not sound that great

SQ is definitely a priority.

So if I got one 12" in a sealed box, any recommendations for the sub if Type R is not so good and SQ is most important?

After more research, looks like JL Audio is very popular for SQ. Their amps looks good also. Would this sound good in a sealed box? Anyone have one?
