original poster - get what you think is a better deal. i realize you cant audition properly installed equipment - and i dont mean some crappy soundboard with a tiny amp driving them lol. your best bet is to see if you can go to a national car audio show or a get together, this way you can at least hear more of a spectrum of drivers to find some that suit you the best. thats my two cents.
I'm not sure what is a better deal quite yet. I'm really torn between the speakers I've mentioned. Prices for the speakers are $260 shipped for the IDs, $280 shipped for both of the SPX PROs, and about $180 shipped for the SPX REFs. I'm really thinking the IDs will give me the most sound for the money because I'll be feeding them 100 watts while all the others will be getting only 70. The only thing is, I don't think they'll be giving me the most midbass. I really just want to get my crossover set to 80 Hz with a 12 dB/octave slope. At 40 Hz, the level will be about -15 dB. The IDs low range at 100 watts is 55 Hz. I'm assuming at -15 dB, 40 Hz will never see 100 watts. All the Alpine sets will be better off playing that low. I'm not sure if -15 dB is enough of a drop in pre-amp volume. I figure -15 dB because 80 Hz will be at -3 dB. Then at an octave lower (half that frequency) 40 Hz will be another 12 dB less for a total of -15 dB. I think I'm breaking this down to a science when I may not need to.

Hey ejschultz, if you can upgrade your doors to a 6.5 you will be much happier with the midbass on the ID>You say you don't want to drive really far just to listen to a set of speakers!

To me thats the best way to judge for yourself whats sounds good to your ears, verse listen to so many different opinions.

If you are looking into the new Alpine -x comps i would at least listen to them before buying.

The older Alpine-x comps where made buy scanspeak & vifa, which are/where really nice.

Im not sure who makes there newer ones, plus i think they have 2 different models out.

I think the the tweeter can get loud, the tweeter sounds more of like the boston pro to me at least.

The lower mid is nice , it can get low, but upper midranrge is kind of harsh when crack them up.

if you decide not to do a rear fill, that will give you more money to add deadener, yes deadener isnt cheap.

Since you are doing a 2way set up, you want to just seal the your doors, add dyna-xorb behind the speaker to help with reflextions.

built your own speaker mount out of MDF.

If you go to homedepot go to the back of the store to where they cut the wood, you can find a scrap bend that has cut up boards from MDF,to birch wood.

I think they sell pieces for like .51-$1.61.

anyways good luck
There are 2 different Type X models: the SPX PROs and the SPX REFs. I'm interested in the PROs. I'll probably keep my rear fill for now, unless someone on here wants to buy a set of Infinity Kappa 693.7i speakers for a reasonable price. In which case, I'd be much more willing to upgrade and modify my adapters to fit a 6.5" because I'd be able to properly power them. It's narrowed down to the ID CXS52 and the Alpine SPX-13PRO. I think either or would suit my needs.

All i can tell you is with the older versions of the IDs and Memphis syncs they were very forgiving as far as bass output. V2 models of ID and the new black versions of the Syncs I am less familiar with but Eric usually puts out a product that is more than 1 dimensional as far as ID goes. Almost all of their subs are IB, sealed or ported and do very well in each application and their mids do well as long as the front is sealed from the back.
By forgiving you mean kind of weak?

Okay, I just found out today that one of my buddies that lives relatively close can help me out in making a new adapter so I won't have to travel or have them shipped from a guy in Arizona. This will make it much easier to go with a 6.5" speaker rather than the 5.25". I'm thinking strongly about the SPX-17PRO now.

they aren't reputalble they don't even have ID speakers in stock that i'm aware of. they've been told to take down their ID stuff over and over again. and they surely don't get it from ID so if i were u i wouldn't order from them.

Well then, thank you. I will not order from them. That pretty much narrows it down to the Alpines then because I can't afford the IDs from anywhere else. There are a few different sellers selling the SPX-17PROs on buy.com. One of them offers a free extended warranty and they have good feedback with buy.com.

you could afford id's used //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif thats how i got mine lol
I bought my Focals used. I wasn't overall happy with them, obviously. I overpaid for what they are. They may have been $500 when they were brand new, but in the condition I received them in, I wouldn't have paid more than $175 if I knew about them. The guy that packed used newspaper and masking tape. The tape ripped the serial off one of the woofers and the tweeters aren't in the best shape (although their performance is definitely 10/10). The surround on one of the woofers has a small mark on it from it hitting something or something hitting it. I probably wouldn't have bought them if I knew about the condition they were in. I'm going to be selling them on here and I'll take detailed pics and state everything about them so the buyer knows.

I'd rather not go the used route again because of that.

Never heard the Alpine Type X Pros, but they look sooooo sexy. Almost bought a set.
I'm hoping they sound as sexy as they look. If only purchasing speakers was based solely on looks everything would be said and done. I'm probably going to order a set of these and try them out for a little while. If I end up not liking them, I'll sell them on here, in like new condition as I'm not hard on my equipment. Then I'll move on to something else. The only real way to tell if I'm going to like a set of speakers it to listen to them in my car. I'll probably take a little loss here and there, but when I find what I'm looking for, it'll all be worth it.

Oh, by the way, I obviously forgot about multi quoting.
