Ignition wire voltage

I want to wire a voltmeter into my system, but the voltmeter I got does not have a third wire for REM.

Therefore, can I wire the positive to the ignition? Does the ignition wire give a voltage reading that relates to my batteries? Iv'e never seen this done before and i'm assuming there's a reason why, I just don't know of it.

By doing that, I'd have a voltmeter that would turn on/off with the car.

Thanks

I don't personally see a problem with it. The ignition is just wired into the startup, putting off the 12v (or whatever the battery is at) signal when the key is in the correct position. Still a positive off the battery and then you wire it to a negative. Using the ground off the HU is a possibility too.
