idmax question

V.1 - Sand cast basket = less accurate dimensionally,

not as smooth

less defination in the basket shape

one piece cone

yes the surround was slightly smaller

soldered tinsils

1st generation bifloridian coil cooling design

pigment rate lower on the powder coat

1st generation spider

v.2 - same as v.1 except

newer taller surround, also slightly stiffer

crimped tinsils

new gluing techniques

new glue and adhesives applied

new spider

V.3 - Pressure cast basket = extremely accurate in dimension

higher pigment powder coat

machined mounting surfaces

high detail in design

more defination in design

much stronger than sand cast

Introduction of the D2, D3, D4 coil applications

New assembly process

new radiator design

aluminum dustcap

composite pulp cone

new surround

new spider

new tinsel to terminal junction assembly process

new spider landing application

there are a few more things to it but those can be left in the design books and not on the forum

The v1s had soldered tinsel leads, a rough finish on the basket, double stacked magnets, and the surround wasn't as tall as the v2s.

The v2s had crimped tinsel leads, a slightly smoother finish on the basket, triple stacked magnets, and the tall narrow surround.

The v3s have a paper blend cone with a aluminum dustcap, an even smoother finish on the basket, redesigned radiator, and is rebuildable.

version 1 was released to the public. They had a slightly rougher finish basket than the v2 and v3.the actual production V1 used triple stack magnets. I have one of the only pair with double stack.

the most noticable difference is soldered tinsel leads and the darker, rougher basket finish.

version2 had a smoother basket finish, crimped tinsel leads and a few other changes.

version 3 (newest and current version) use a field servicable basket, held together by philips head screws, a paper/kevlar woven composite cone material. aluminum dust cap, new radiator design. the basket finish is much smoother and flatter and can now be chromed or painted. prior baskets had too rough of a finish to be chromed painted glossy colors.

gasket on v3 are also a plastic matrial with a more refined embossed ID logo that does not protrude basket teh basket edge as much.

V1 and V2 are basically the same, but if you look at the V1's surround, they look taller but skinnier. The v2's looks fatter, but according to Matt, they measured the same, because the cones are the same.

The V2's surround is stiffer than the V1.

On V3, Winslow is right..

At least, mine was obtained looong time ago, and it was the first max avail on the public, no v2 stickers on the box.

Maybe Idtech can contribute?

PS: my max's gasket is also different. on mine, the screws are all the way inside the screw hole, but V2 and V3, you can see the screws on the basket.

also a little difference in mine, since ive first hand seen all 3----i have a v1--the screws are way down in the mounting ring, on the v2 it had a beveled(sc) trim ring which held the screw ---i noticed this due to leaks in my v1 where the screws go down---a little foam gasket around these holes did the job though---

on the v.2's the tinsel leads are conn'd to the push terminals with a small phillips screws and on the the v.3's they use a nut to conn. the tinsel lead to the push terminal... not sure about the v.1's
There are pretty much all the meaningful replies in the thread I posted

There is also going go be a 15" IDMax, an IDOne processor, and an IDQv3. Current ETA is early Spring of 2034 //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

ok got off the phone with matt at id. looks like i'm just gonna hold off on the idmax's till the v4's arrive, supposed to be a whole new driver (10's will be same). bigger voice coil, better thermal capacity, AND...AND...smaller ported boxes, sealed is the same. New cones new surrounds and i don't think they're gonna use flat wires anymore. anyway, sounds fun, should be here in february but expect a hefty price bump

Here is a review of a prototype v4 for ya:

idmax 10" V4 prototype review

Yes, it is the V4!!!

It's a prototype so the actual production may have different look/sound, so...

It was 10:40 PM, I was cooling off from gym and decided to swap my max. Boy was I wrong!

Here is a shot of the V3 and V4 next to each other.

awesome glue work there, Matt!

Notice the change in cone assembly. The new cone assembly is much more rigid and stiff. No more easily dented dustcap..

Next, the

motor

Notice the v3 on left has 3 stack of magnets while the v4 has 2, but fatter? My box has this brace that lets my max's motor to "sit" and help support it.

So yeah, instead of cooling down, I sweat even more to fit the bigger motor

The V4 has totally new cone assembly. It doesn't have that "ashtray" metal to help dissipate heat to the dustcap.

It has v3's. Look at that healthy voice coil. I do take care of my stuff

The system:

diagram

Listening test:

I noticed the V4 has softer suspension. This usuall y means higher sensitivity!

But I also kinda worried since the dustcap is no longer aluminum. I always like the sound of woofers with metal cone. All the woofers with those cones that I owned have that "kick" in upper freq. We'll see.

I popped in Ian Van Dahl's Ace album and went to track 2.

I always like this track (Will I) at minute 1:30 to 2:00.

This track has that fast beat that works out the sub really good and be able to "tell" you how well your sub plays fast and how much control it has.

I immediately noticed that my sub is overpowering my front stage. Higher sensitivity! I had to tame it down 2 db to leve everything up. I also immediately noticed that this sub is much smoother than the V3. I love the V3 due to it's impact on upper freq bass. My taste is always into fast accurate sub. I don't care about low end that much.

The v4 is very transparent, blends very well and it actually makes it hard to detect where the sub is.

I listened to few more tracks and call it for the day since it's late.

My conclusion for today:

V3: Love the sub. Quick, punchy, accurate and has that impact on upper freq. But this sometimes on some tracks makes the sub sounds a lil too thick.

V4: High sensitivity. This is good. Less power needed.

Smooth, very smooth, blends very well. Very transparent.

So far, it's a toss up for me.I my V3 due to its impact. But the V4 tops it on overall performance.

I'll break it in in few weeks and listen some more.

Time to zzzzzzzzzz.

Thanks Matt!!!!
