there are more factors that go into it then port specs. the biggest killer of subs is clipping.

If you have a box that's tuned too high, (50Hz, for example) and there's nothing stopping your subwoofer (A Subsonic or Highpass filter, for example) from playing notes far below (20Hz) the tuning frequency of the enclosure (50Hz) then your sub may over-excurt (move too far) and damage itself mechanically.
